My research focuses on memory, film and the concept of gaze. I am interested in how the act of seeing and being seen is culturally, socially and historically determined. The aim of my research is to explore the functions and manifestations of the gaze in Baltic films about the Soviet past and World War II, and how the gaze affects the spectator’s cinematic experience, the way of seeing and remembering. Through the analysis of the gaze I also intend to look at how the representations of memories in Baltic films contribute to the formation of cultural memory and national identity.
